Great set up for beginners!
By T. Craw
This is a great set up for beginners. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this package again. I can't find anything major to complain about, and my 11 year old son is loving his first electric guitar! An older person or someone who has more experience with guitars in general, may find this package lacking, as they most likely have all those little extras that this Fender comes with. I would recommend looking for a hard case, as I feel that the jam bag that comes with the guitar, won't protect it as well as a regular case. All in all, a great value!

Starcaster breaks the mold!
By Ari
The guitar looks beautiful- a fiery maple sunburst finish on a sturdy, well-finished wooden body; and it sounds even better, especially when hooked up to the amp! The strings take some getting used to, at least when one is a beginner, but they sound clear and crisp when plucked. The amp clarifies the sound enough that one can tell exactly which notes were hit and if a finger so much as brushed against the wrong string, magnifying the smallest vibrations produced by pick or fingers at the fret. And the tuner will help narrow down the correct tension in the string to produce an accurate note, although it sometimes takes a minute to work and seems to have trouble identifying the notes or the string. The pics cover the entire color spectrum. The stand and carrying case work perfectly. So far I have not used any extra strings, but they will probably be easy to affix when necessary and sound just the same as the original strings. The DVD that comes with it is OK, but it only has part of the tutorial included in the complete instructional DVD, which I bought separately for an extra 20 bucks. Overall, the package is an excellent deal for the money, and it is worth it if one is interested in learning to play the electric guitar!

Fantastic Buy For The Money
By N. MCLAUGHLIN
This is a nice quality guitar, which comes with a stand, pics, tuner, strings, strap and amplifier... can't beat the price. The picture shows there should be a guitar case with the pack, but it doesn't come with one, which seems a little deceiving. If they're not going to include the case, then don't show it in the picture. Other than that, it's a great quality guitar with all the needed accessories for a great price. Recommended!

The one I keep going back to...
By Shawnelle
I've had this guitar for about 4 years so I think I can offer some insight into it's pros/cons.

I bought this guitar as my first acoustic, primarily playing bass/electric guitar up until then. I was initially disappointed with the action and effort it took to play on my particular model but soon became inured to it. The sound is far more sonorous than it may initially seem. The body gives off a really strong resonance for some reason that creates an almost mystical sonic quality. That being said, it's a quiet guitar but perfect if you're just playing for yourself or with someone else.

Quality wise: my specific model came with somewhat unpolished fret edges that slightly hung off the edge of the fingerboard though they weren't much of a problem. The action was a bit high though one can get used to it pretty easily - the shop said it couldn't be lowered without creating buzzing. The neck has staid level all these years - no truss rod, no warping - pleasant surprise. So if nothing else the necks do stay in place if mine is any example of the average. It also stays in tune very well. (I use bronze extra lights)

The ONLY problem I have had with it was really my fault and is an obvious mistake: I had it inside on a very cold winter day and opened the doors and windows. Needless to say it did not like the temperature and humidity plummeting in the span of 2 minutes and a big pop and crack happened which made a noticeable tear in the body below the bridge. This surprisingly didn't affect the sound or playability at all though I eventually did get it fixed. In conclusion; yes, it's made of wood and this was expected. Pointless anecdote complete.

Throughout the years I've owned much better quality guitars yet for some reason I kept playing this one the most and ended up composing the majority of my songs using it. Eventually, I sold all my guitars except this one. I love fingerstyle picking and it works great on this guitar. It's been dropped, beaten on, and for the most part just treated poorly but still plays fine and sounds great. It's just so convenient to have a small guitar lying around that you don't need to plug in to an amp, I'm guessing this is why it spurs so much creativity. A good buy if you want a guitar that can travel and be around all the time just about anywhere.

If you REALLY need a small guitar...
By Sunn Kram
The Backpacker is a fun instrument that really maximizes the sound and playability of something this size.

It is certainly well built. The clean lines and sturdy construction of a Martin acoustic is there. I've knocked mine around quite a bit camping and travelling, including a 23-day tour through Africa. Its holding up fine and still plays like new.

The tone is banjo-esque and sounds especially nice when finger-picked. You do get more volume than you might expect out of this small of a body but it is mostly on the higher end, don't expect much bass response.

Playability takes a bit of getting used to. First off, you really have to wear the strap and stand up as there is not enough body to support it on your leg or lap. Personally, I rest my elbow along the top and let my picking hand drop down. It's kind of a strange angle and not the most comfortable. Someone with shorter arms (I'm a tall guy) might be able to play it more traditionally. Also, the action sits just a tad high as a result of the short neck. Make sure to keep extra light guage strings on it to compensate. Overall its kind of awkward but if you play frequently you will adjust and find the good tones.

Mostly, I would just recommend asking yourself how much you really need a tiny guitar. If you are literally backpacking and carrying all of your stuff for a significant amount of time, I totally get it. However if you're just looking for something for basic travel and you don't want to take your nice guitar, why not consider getting a cheap, full-size and a gig bag? The portability is not that big of a deal unless you're hauling your stuff for miles. You also won't be devastated if it gets beat up or stolen. These days, you can get a very playable and decent sounding acoustic for $100 (thanks Asia!). The Backpacker costs twice that and is far less enjoyable as an instrument. I will most likely sell mine eventually and do exactly that.

Very good guitar and not only for it'modest size.
By Dnul Radiv
I received this little guitar today (October 2010), and started playing it right out of the box, or rather out of the gig bag. It arrived in perfect order after having travelled all the way from the US to Europe. All I had to do was tuning it of course. Included were the gig bag and two straps, one for the guitar and one for the gig bag, and various pamphlets were also included. It was supplied with Martin M170 strings. It is very well set up with perfect action according to my taste, and intonation is faultless.

I own a Martin D28, and really didn't expect too much of a sound from this baby (virtually), but was very pleasantly surprised. It sounds very martinesque, and being a fingerpicker it really doesn't matter if the sound isn't that powerful because it's very silvery and balanced. It really "outsounds" it's modest size, and projects the sound very well. I've owned other standard size acoustic guitars that don't have been that much louder and far less defined. Nevertheless, I intend to have it in the cabin of my boat with no need for a shouter, and the size makes it perfect for that.

It's well made with a satin finish, and though I usually prefer a harder shiny finish it really doesn't matter. I usually put Thomastik strings on all my guitars, but those Martin 170 strings are perfectly suited for this Backpacker so I won't need it this time. It's a little top heavy with that small body, but with the strap tied around the headstock that is easily corrected. I had some doubt about holding such a small instrument correctly as I'm used to embracing guitars like my D28 dreadnought, Gretsch G6122 Nashville Classic and G100 Synchromatic, much bigger instruments, but I had no problems with this one. It's just a matter of practice.

So have no fears in getting the Backpacker because of it's small (and very handy) size.

Great Beginner Guitar Package
By Gerald D. Fensterer
This Yamaha FG700S bundle is a great starter package for those who want to start playing guitar. I did a lot of online research to find out which guitars were best (sound quality vs price), and this one came out on top of at least 3 of 5 reviews (it was second in the others). I am also a novice guitar player, so take that into account with my review. My purchase came from Austin Bazaar.

The packaging was secure and quick. No damage, and received in two-days with free-shipping.

The bundle is a bit misleading. You're supposed to get the guitar, a hard case, strap, stand, polish, tuner, strings, picks, capo, stringwinder and DVD. My package came with everything except for the polish. The FG700S is a great guitar, and came with Yamaha anti-rust FS50BT strings. The guitar itself retails on Amazon for ~$200, so in the package, you're really getting the rest of the items for about $50.

The black guitar hardcase is awesome. It has 4 brass clips, one with lock and key. It is faux-leather on the outside with 3 brass feet on the underside. It also has a molded plastic handle. The interior is a plush felt and foam coating with a hidden "stuff box" for all your guitar extras to be hidden away behind the guitar neck. The guitar I have fits so snugly, it won't fall out even if the case is open and inverted. Not sure who made it, but it's a great hard case. You can find hard cases on Amazon for $50 and up.

The strap I received was a Levy's black poly guitar strap ~$11 on Amazon. Not bad, nothing special, but will do the job.

The stand is a black foam-padded, 3-piece unmarked guitar stand. It seems sturdily made to hold a guitar. It comes with a rubber cinch that holds the guitar neck in the upper part of the adjustable neck holder. It has 3 rubber feet, but none of the legs are locking. You can get one for about $12 through Amazon.

There was no polish, but it came with a yellow Austin Bazaar polishing cloth. You can buy a yellow one from amazon for $4. The Ernie Ball polishing kit shown in the picture is not offered in this bundle.

The tuner is a grey multi-swivel Cherub WST-900 (~$19 plus $8 shipping). It's a great tuner that determines tune by either sound via mic or vibrations via computer chip. It takes only seconds to attach to your guitar head and then literally just a few twists on the strings until the guitar's tuned. It has colored LED's and arrows to tell you how far off key your strings are. Also, it has two pivoting hinges, so it can be facing any direction you want it to--or at least pointing at you as you're holding the guitar. It can also be used to tune other musical instruments and has the ability to tune both sharps and flats as well.

The strings are Austin Bazaar light Gauge strings: .012, .016, BB24, BB32, BB42, and BB54. You can find a set of light strings for about $5 from other companies on Amazon.

A card of 4 Austin Bazaar picks were included, but they really are cheap. They come on a flimsy plastic card, and probably aren't worth what they're printed on. Luckily I got a set of nice ones for X-mas. But don't expect the twelve you see on the picture of the bundle.

I also received a black Dunlop 83CB acoustic trigger capo. It's nice, and does what a capo is supposed to do. A Jim Dunlop 83 can be found on Amazon for ~$13.

A yellow Austin Bazaar string winder was included, not a black one like shown in the picture. It is comparable to either the Dunlop Gel (~$2) or Fender 99-1028 ($5). Nothing special here.

The Yamaha Quickstart DVD is included in the package, but don't expect the Gig-Maker DVD. It's not included.

All in all, a great starter set, but I'm not giving it a 5-star rating because the marketing on the bundle is inaccurate. However, for the extra $50 this package costs above the guitar alone, you're getting ~$125 worth of stuff. Savings to the buyer: $75. If you'll use all the bundled stuff, it's a great discount.

Great bundle
By Sleepless
Bought this for my 15yo son's birthday. He has been wanting to learn and this bundle seemed like it would have everything he needed to get started except a tutorial book. He took this guitar over to his friend's house and all the guys were impressed with the quality of the guitar, but of course they had to tease him because his mom didn't buy him electric... (but they admit that they all learned on acoustic, so he is doing just fine and on the right track).

This is a beautiful guitar that looks like it will last many years with proper care. All the included items were of good quality and seemed like they would last awhile until he needs upgraded in a couple of years. This is a much better deal than anything we had available in our local music store. Shipping was very fast and everything was well packed. I would feel comfortable buying from Kraft Music again.

I am so glad I chose the hard case over the soft one that is in a different auction.. totally worth the extra cost. This case and stand are much better than I expected them to be and it will help my son keep his guitar nice.... I am totally happy with this deal.

The book I bought to go with this is How to Play Guitar: Everything You Need to Know to Play the Guitar and my son found it very helpful in starting out.

Great Bundle
By Karen
After figuring out which guitar I wanted I found this bundle. Wonderful bundle, gave me everything I needed to get started. The CD was ok as a quick start set up CD. I just loved the fact that for the price, I got a guitar, picks, cleaning/polishing kit, strap, tuner, stand, extra set of strings, string winder, and case (I didn't get the Capo). The guitar alone costs $199, and after pricing hard cases for my husband, they ran around $60+, stands are about $10+ etc. I think it's a great buy, price each one separately, you'll see. Great guitar great bundle. I love my Yamaha, great guitar although I'm a newbie.

A good first drum kit
By Thomas Grillo
This drum kit was relatively easy to assemble, though one of the toms had a poorly mounted arm holder which needed to be repositioned to match the hole in the drum.

The one cymbal that came with the kit is very thin, just a bit of pressed brass. It's easily dinged. I would have gladly paid a wee bit more for a kit with a better cymbal that can take more abuse.

All in all, for the price, it's a good first kit to learn the drums with. Just don't go crazy with the cymbal.

I recommend tossing a pillow in the kick, and getting a set of E-rings to give the kit a more rock sound if you want it.

Nice drum set, good price
By Tracy Sundberg
The sound quality was very good. A little challenging to put together but my 8 year old did it with not too much help. The green is not as bright as it appears in this picture. It is a little black looking with a green tint. The size of the set seems huge to me, It takes up more space than I thought it would, and I have played with it myself, along with my child. It is a very good set for the price, and for a beginner set. Hopefully even past the beginner stage.

Nice guitar
By Mr. Marian Brown
This Fender Starcaster is my first electric guitar and I consider it to be pretty nice --- after all, it is a Fender. I'm not exactly thriled with the small amp that came with the kit, but, hey, I'm a beginner so I shouldn't complain. The kit came with everything but the guitar stand, so I sent a note to the supplier and they sent one within a few days. The gig bag leaves a lot to be desired (too thin), so I ordered a better one. Also, the cable that came with the kit developed a short about two weeks after it arrived, so I have to contact the seller about that, too. Bottom line, a very good good guitar and accessories for the price.

Awesome Kit Great for beginners
By J. Carr
So I ordered this kit mainly to just have in the house. I figured it was not that expensive and I was reading some of the reviews and a few were mixed about the neck being warped or the guitar not staying in tune. So I figured I would check all those things out as soon as it arrived.

The Guitar arrived undamaged and packaged well. Comes with a really loud little 15 watt amp. A set of extra strings (Good for beginners), a ton of different weight picks, a nylon strap and a nylon carry bag and a pretty good chord and a stand that works well. I had issues with none of these things. I tuned the Guitar, played light and heavy for about 45 minutes, checked to see if it was in tune and it was in tune just like when I started. I'll pick it up again later and check again as I check each time I pick it up to play anyway. I use a Snark SN - 2 tuner for the guitar and I recommend both this guitar package and the snark SN -2 Tuner. You can get both of these on Amazon.com and get them at a good price.

I did check the neck out and it's as straight as an arrow. Everything was packaged very well. I was amazed they could fit the amp guitar stand and all the rest in one box and pack it tight with protection.

I am a fan of Fender stuff.
By K. P. Moore
I have two Fender Guitars. A Telecaster and a Stratocaster Standard. The only thing I did not like was the Rosewood Neck on the Strat. I replaced it with an Ebony neck.
These guitars are bullet proof, I play them for hours on end with out any problems. Care to them is simple, clean them, tune them and replace the strings. Nice guitars

Be real, this is a good entry guitar
By GrouchyDad
I have this guitar pack and I have to say that the number of negative comments is amazing. I am not sure what people expect for $200.00. No! This is not a $1200.00 dollar American made strat, nor is the $500.00 Mexican made strat. It's a low cost made in China strat.

Regardless of where it was made, I found the workmanship to be very acceptable. The guitar is beautiful and the rosewood fretboard is very nice. The whole guitar has a solid feel. My only real complaint is that the center pickup has an unusually low level output. But there is no way I would return this guitar just because of a single pickup. At worst case I'd just have Fender send a replacement. And Yes! As other reviews have noted, the amp hums a little (especially at higher volumes). But, this has more to with the single coil pickups used in the guitar. If you want humbucker pickups, you're going to pay more. Also the amp is just a small 10W practice amp. It works fine for lower volume practicing. I have fallen in love with mine and play it quietly in the evenings to relax from the world.

I have a family and very little extra money. I am greatful that Fender has provided these low cost kits. It gives me the opportunity to own and relax with a Fender, something that would be questionable with a better (read more expensive) guitar. And, if the kids develop an interest, I won't cry too much if they add a few scratches to it.

Folks need to keep things in perspective. This is a low cost entry level guitar. Understanding those limitations, I highly recommend this kit to anyone just starting out.

cool guitar.....
By A Customer
This is a very cool looking guitar.my dad got it for me for an early christmas gift, and i love it! sounds very cool, anything from nirvana to metallica.very pleased.the whammy bar doesn't work too well, or that might be me, but every thing it comes with are great, for a ten watt amp, it really kicks and it is loud!!!!! the tuner is ok,but i bought the sparkly black with brown finger board and pearl pick guard, and it looks amazing. way better than the normal black fender.the one i have also comes with headphones and the adapter for the guitar amp head phone slot.also a very cool guitar stand, which i would recommend.very cool guitar for beginers intermediate guitar players who just want a quality guitar to use.also the over drive sounds really cool. so parents who's kids want a guitar, get this.it comes with everything you need to play!

What can't be said about this guitar? For under $200 you get the guitar, amp, strap, travel bag, tuner, stand, picks, extra strings, and beginner lesson dvd. All of it feels very nice and on top of that it sounds excellent. The little practice amp can really shake the windows, I was throughly surprised. This of course is all under $200 and this is because of the quality. This isn't a $1200 Fender and you probably wouldn't be playing in stadiums with this thing but to entertain a group of people you have found the right axe. This also isn't a single body American made Fender, it's manufactured in Asia but don't tell anybody else that. Would make a perfect gift for a beginning guitarist. I have been playing acoustically for a year now and this is my first electric and I couldn't be any happier.
